Colon Suprep Instructions

A colonoscopy is a procedure to look in the colon for anything abnormal.

It is VERY important that your colon is cleared of all stool before your colonoscopy. This will allow your doctor to see the lining of your colon and look for any abnormalities, like polyps or growths. To clean your colon; you must:

  • follow a special diet the whole day before your test
  • take the prescribed bowel prep medication that you will get from your pharmacy

Special Diet:

You are only allowed to have CLEAR LIQUIDS the whole day before your colonoscopy.

Examples:

  • lemon-lime or ginger ale sodas
  • gelatin (NOT red or purple)
  • apple juice
  • ice popsicles (NOT red or purple)
  • white grape juice
  • coffee or tea (NO creamer or milk)
  • broth
  • water

What you need to bring the day of your procedure:

  • An adult driver (they must wait in the waiting room while you are having the procedure)
  • photo ID
  • health insurance card
  • 3 pages of paperwork filled out from your packet

When you go home after your procedure, NO driving or working until the next morning.

A nurse from the endoscopy unit will call you several days before to review your instructions and help you with any questions you may have about your procedure.

Plan to spend about 1-2 hours at the facility for your procedure.

SUPREP – Bowel Prep

How to take the bowel prep:

Remember: Clear liquid diet the whole day before your colonoscopy.


At 6:00 p.m. the evening before your colonoscopy:

It is okay to continuye to drink clear liquids all night.

4 hours before your arrival for the colonoscopy, take the 2nd dose of SUPREP. Follow the same steps above; you must be finished in one hour though. Nothing in your mouth 3 hours before you arrive, not even water, gum, or candy.

Medications:

If you take medications for your blood pressure or your heart in the morning, you are required to take them with a sip of water, at least 3 hours before your arrival on the day of your colonoscopy.

If you take inhalers or any breathing treatments, do not skip them the morning of your colonoscopy. On the morning of your colonoscopy, do not take any other medications unless your doctor told you to.

If you are diabetic, check your blood sugar before you leave the house for your colonoscopy.

If you take blood thinners or diabetic medication, be sure to get specific instructions from the staff about possibly stopping these medications. Each patient is different, so be sure to get your special instructions.
